JOHANNES BRAHMS – Ein deutsches Requiem

Melbourne Recital Centre, Sunday 30 July 2017, 2:30pm

On Sunday July 30 The Star Chorale, led by Music Director Dr Kathleen McGuire, will present Brahms’ acclaimed German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem) at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

This Sunday afternoon performance marks the Recital Centre debut of one of Australia’s most exciting new opera talents. Young Wiradjuri soprano Shauntai Batzke has been wowing Australian audiences with her strong stage presence and luscious voice since her September 2016 debut at the Sydney Opera House. There she played “Old Alice” in Deborah Cheetham’s Pecan Summer, produced by Short black Opera, a performance that resulted in two BroadwayWorld Australia – Sydney Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in an Opera.

A developing artist with Short Black Opera Company, Australia’s national Indigenous opera company, Batzke received the 2014 and 2015 Harold Blair Scholarship with the Melba Opera Trust and also studied at the Belle Arti Center for the Arts, New York.

Batzke will share the Recital Centre stage with established baritone Lucas de Jong, an Opera Australia regular who has sung with The Royal Opera Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the European Chamber Opera.

The two opera stars will be joined by the Star Chorale and orchestra, conducted by Dr Kathleen McGuire. With thirty years’ experience working with choirs, orchestras, and other ensembles in Australia and overseas, McGuire was appointed as Music Director of the Kew-based Star Chorale at the beginning of 2017.

Ein deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms draws its lyrics from the Lutheran Bible and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful choral works ever written. Unlike more traditional musical requiems, it does not focus on the souls of the deceased. Instead this work focuses on the living, with the ideas of sympathy and comfort appearing as recurring themes.

Tickets: $58 ($49 concession, $20 student). Group discounts available
