Antonio Salieri arrived in Vienna in 1766 as an orphaned prodigy and rose to become the Austrian Imperial Kapellmeister. Though famously mythologized as Mozart’s bitter rival, he was actually a highly respected court composer and a renowned teacher who mentored legends like Beethoven, Schubert, and Liszt.  Franz Joseph Haydn‘s history in Vienna is also deeply intertwined with Vienna’s musical legacy. Arriving in 1740 as a chorister at St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom), he built his foundational career in Vienna. He lived in a house in Gumpendorf (now the Haydnhaus) from 1797 until his death in 1809. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart moved to Vienna in 1781 after severing ties with his Salzburg employers. Mozart spent his most creatively productive years in Vienna from 1781 until his death in 1791. Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) played a central role in Mozart’s life: he married Constanze Weber here in 1782, had his children baptized here, and had his funeral service held in the cathedral’s Chapel of the Cross on December 6, 1791.
